Ground Penetrating Radar

Summary

NDT Divisoin conducted non-destructive ground penetrating radar (GPR) at various proposed equipment support locations on an elevated slab at the Fields Point Sewage Treatment Plant in Providence, RI. The purpose of this investigation was to determine and mark out the location of steel reinforcement present in a concrete slab at 20 areas of interest. This information assisted IPC Lydon in avoiding hitting and damaging steel reinforcement during the installation drilling/grouting operations of anchor bolts to secure equipment to the concrete slab.

Performing ground penetrating radar (GPR) on a concrete slab.

Scope

NDT Division was contracted by IPC Lydon to determine the reinforcment present in a 30ft by 30ft elevated concrete slab that would support equipment for National Grid inside the Fields Point Sewage Treatment Plant in Providence, RI. The equipment being installed required anchored bolts to be grouted into holes drilled in the concrete slab.  During the drilling operation it is critical to avoid hitting and damaging the steel reinforcing bars.

To locate the exact location of the reinforcing bars in the concrete slab, NDT Divison used a ground penetrating radar (GPR). GPR sends and receives electromagnetic energy through the concrete that is reflected off conductive material like steel.  GPR is able to nondestructively scan concrete to locate embedded metals.

Solution

NDT Division identified and marked the location of reinforcement within the elevated slab, enabling contractors to avoid rebar while drilling anchor bolt holes at 20 different locations.

Thanks to the reinforcement positioning data provided by the NDT Division, the drilling operations were completed successfully without hitting or damaging the embedded rebar. The anchor bolts were then securely grouted into the concrete, ensuring the equipment was firmly mounted on the elevated slab.
